Providing home care services for people living with dementia, requires creating a safe, comfortable, and nurturing environment that caters to their unique needs while preserving their dignity and quality of life. Dementia impacts each person in their own individual way, it can affect their memory, communication and behaviour, so understanding the condition and its progression is important but understanding who the person is - is crucial to delivering their best life outcomes
Communication is the cornerstone of dementia care and from the outset our staff work closely with the person with dementia and their family to develop a comprehensive profile of them as a person. Documenting their background, who they are, what they have done in their life, who are their family immediate and extended, what their interests are – these are all key questions to understanding and supporting the person with dementia. It is important to have this information, so support and assistance is provided, that encourages their engagement in meaningful activities, so they feel a sense of purpose in their life.
Our care staff support people living with dementia in their home in their familiar surroundings, with their personal belongings, their routines and rituals, which all assist in maintaining a connection to their identity and past, fostering a sense of reassurance. Establishing consistent routines in their familiar environment reduces confusion and anxiety, giving the person a sense of stability and predictability. It is important their primary carer is acknowledged as a crucial part of their care regime, and their health and wellness is a high priority to enable them to provide the on-going support to their loved one. This includes access to regular respite, dementia information and education and if suitable attending support groups.
